“The diversity in backgrounds and experience complement one another. There is just so much opportunity to learn from one another. It’s really been great!”
Sonia Khanna graduated from the Kellogg School of Management in 2007. Prior to attending business school, she worked for a well known Swiss investment bank in New York within its mortgage backed securities group. “My focus while in business school was real estate. While recruiting for potential job opportunities, I decided to take a look at open positions on the CapitalSource website and applied for a position in the Structured Finance Group. Soon after, I was contacted by an internal recruiter, and it’s been a great experience from the start.”
Sonia is now an Investment Officer in the Structured Finance–Real Estate Business group and has a lot to say about the differences between this experience and her last. “When I was at my previous employer I was limited to working in front of a computer all day long. There was little opportunity for client interaction. At CapitalSource, I am given the responsibility to run with a deal with appropriate guidance. I have learned so much because of it.”
And the differences do not end there. Sonia points to the level of collegiality among her peers as one of the starkest and most positive differences. “I know every member of Structured Finance around the country. There is a lot of opportunity for collaboration. I feel like I can reach out to my counterparts anywhere and ask questions or get feedback on deals on which I am working. And it’s not just a professional place; I have truly developed friendships in addition to professional relationships.”
Sonia also enjoys the culture of giving at CapitalSource. “It’s great that our CEO is so dedicated to charitable giving. Since I joined the company, I have been involved with a number of volunteer opportunities through the company’s volunteer program, ServiceCorps. One of my colleagues is a team leader, and once a month, we volunteer as a team at a local soup kitchen. In addition, CapitalSource takes part in a variety of charitable events on a company-wide level.”
Sonia feels that it is the diversity here at CapitalSource that has enhanced her experience and keeps her so attracted to the organization. “The diversity in backgrounds and experience complement one another. There is just so much opportunity to learn from one another. It’s really been great!”
"By taking advantage of the opportunity to gain additional experience, employees are able to build skills and make career advancements when job opportunities become available.”
Rashad Kawmy started with CapitalSource in 2008 as a Credit Analyst in Portfolio Management. In 2010 Rashad transferred to the Leveraged Finance Group as an Associate and was promoted to Vice President in March 2012.
“The most rewarding part of my job is conducting diligence on potential investment opportunities and working directly with financial sponsors. Regardless of transaction size, the diligence hurdles at CapitalSource are high and the financial sponsors that we work with are very sophisticated. This requires us to perform comprehensive company-specific and industry due diligence in order to adequately assess credit add maximum value for our financial partners.”
Asked what makes CapitalSource such an attractive place to work, Rashad answers, “CapitalSource is uniquely focused on results and contributions. With a focus on hard work and a commitment to quality, employees at all levels have an opportunity to make an impact on transactions.”
Rashad has had great success growing within the organization. “The corporate culture makes it easy for us to take on responsibility beyond our jobs descriptions. By taking advantage of the opportunity to gain additional experience, employees are able to build skills and make career advancements when job opportunities become available.”
"Our leaders do an outstanding job of communicating, and I feel that it creates an environment of professionalism and cooperation."
Sean Petitt joined CapitalSource Bank in 2008 as a Finance Manager within the Financial Planning and Analysis department. Over the years, he has enjoyed increased responsibilities, and, in 2012, earned a promotion to AVP, Senior Manager.
In Sean’s opinion, “there are two major areas that set CapitalSource apart from other companies—its leadership and the culture it fosters.”
Sean is impressed with the leadership at CapitalSource. “It begins with executive management developing a vision for the company along with a clear strategy to help employees realize that vision. Then, both vision and strategy are shared with all employees. And that is the most critical piece as it puts everyone from staff to executives on the same page. Our leaders do an outstanding job of communicating, and I feel it creates an environment of professionalism and cooperation.”
This environment is the starting point for a unique culture and workplace. According to Sean, “CapitalSource has a large balance sheet, but the culture that has evolved within the organization makes it feel like a family. The company cares very much about its employees, and this fuels a great sense of employee loyalty and dedication. CapitalSource invests heavily in the development of its employees, and it’s easy for me to say that the experience has been invaluable.”
“CapitalSource invests a lot in its people. The management team is constantly encouraging employees to stay current in our field of business, and we are given the tools to do so."
Julia Wu started with CapitalSource in 2005 as an Administrative Assistant. Within a year, she became a Help Desk Technician in the Information Technology group. In 2008, she was promoted to the position of Senior Help Desk Technician, and, in 2012, to Network Engineer.
“A’ha moments—when I solve particularly difficult problems—are the best part of my job. There is a sense of accomplishment when you help resolve an issue and are able to implement a long-term solution.”
Julia does not underestimate the company’s continued contributions to the success of its employees. “The company is very supportive of its employees’ development at different levels of the firm. Not only have I been able to go back to school to pursue an advanced degree, but I’ve also had the opportunity to take field-related training courses that would not have been offered at higher education institutes.”
When asked what makes CapitalSource such an attractive place to work, Julia answers, “CapitalSource invests a lot in its people. The management team is constantly encouraging employees to stay current in our field of business, and we are given the tools to do so. Additionally, I find that, with many companies, hard work sometimes just isn’t recognized, and this is definitely not the case at CapitalSource.”
“A great deal of intellectual capital is shared among the departments in the company. We have several open forums each month for employees to ask questions and share ideas. I find that opportunity a terrific addition to the benefits of working here.”
CapitalSource supports and is fully committed to the principles of equal employment opportunity. It is CapitalSource's policy to provide equal employment opportunity without regard to race, color, religion, gender, pregnancy, age, national origin, veteran's status, marital status, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, or any other factor prohibited by law.
